Aiming to be England's first
carbon neutral village

University of Chester informs us that we have cut our emissions by 21% since we started! Well done everyone.

OUR AIM; The Cheshire village of Ashton Hayes (pop. 1000 approx.) is aiming to to become the first small community in England to achieve carbon neutral status. We want our children and future generations to know that we tried to do our bit to stem global warming and encourage other communities to follow suit.

We are delighted to send our best wishes to Eden Mills which is aiming to become the first carbon-neutral village in North America. See here for their excellent website.

ASHTON/BANGLADESH LINKS DEVELOPING: Our primary school children (Class 2) hear about how life in Bangladesh is affected by climate change. Ziaul Hoque Mukta (beige jacket) and Md. Khalid Hossain (to his left) of Oxfam show a film depicting life in the village of Sahena Begum (who visited the school on 6th March 2008). Headmaster Rob Ford (left of screen) is hoping to work with Oxfam on a joint educational project. We are also planning to support Sahena's request for solar lighting in Kunderpara village. We are winners! Our project and DVD film has won the International Visual Communication Association (IVCA) Clarion award. We are a winner in the Climate Change Communications. This is what the judges said 'An inspiring example of how a small village can strive to be carbon neutral and, by helping tackle a global issue, can bring the local community closer together. This unassuming and honest communications campaign has inspired other communities across the country and internationally; Ashton Hayes has become a symbol for positive action on climate change'.

Presentations: Kate Harrison presents to Roundhay Environmental Action Project in Yorkshire at a well attended meeting.

Thanks to Cheshire Highways for building us a great new £75,000 footpath to the nearby railway station at Mouldsworth. The route is now being used by many people and helping to reduce our transport footprint. Thanks also to the Ashton Hayes gardening club for installing flower beds around our village signs.
